AOL Error Messages

Good error messages:

  1. Don’t blame the user

  2. Instruct the user as to what to do

  3. Are as straightforward as possible

  4. Keep the voice and tone of the product

Situation

AOL has a series of error messages that are adorable but hard to read because they’re packed with extra copy. One in particular — Error 5 — had potential to benefit from good UX practices.

Task

Make the error message user-friendly while keeping the whimsical tone of the brand.

Approach

I culled unnecessary copy, creating more white space, and kept what I felt was most helpful to the user.
